Sample System-Wide Program
This program is directed at the system as a whole by targeting the needs of the
clinicians and those in patient contact. The goal of the program is to give
these key individuals better ways of communicating with each other and
patients, managing stress and dealing with difficult situations. The
accomplishment of this goal will, then, lead to improved employee satisfaction,
decreased staff turnover and greater patient satisfaction.
As the interactions of physicians with non-physician clinical staff within most
systems is critical, the system-wide approach includes programming for the
non-physician clinical teams as well as the physicians.
Pre-program
Clinician satisfaction and burnout will be assessed.
Patient satisfaction will be assessed.
Program introduction
In order to engage the interest of the clinician participants in the program
there will be a "Finding Balance in a Clinical Life" introductory lecture to
the medical staff and leadership from other clinical disciplines. This lecture
will introduce the concepts of life balance to the staff as a whole. At this
session, the first weekend "Finding Balance in a Medical Life" program will be
announced. "The Bringing Balance to the Clinical Staff Program" will also be
announced.
Physician training
1. A two-day Finding Balance in a Medical Lifesession will be held for
the physicians. This program can accommodate up to 50 physicians at a time. The
number of physicians involved in this project will determine the need for the
number of two-day programs.
2. Optional web based follow up– A twelve week web-based discussion program
will be delivered between the initial and advanced programs. (described below)
3. An Advanced One Day Programwill be held for the physicians who
attended the two day sessions. This session will deepen the practices and
techniques taught in the "Finding Balance" sessions.
Non-physician clinical staff training
1. "Bringing Balance to the Clinical Staff" will be delivered to groups of 50
staff members (non-physician) at a time. The number of clinical staff involved
will determine the need for the number of programs. Each program will be a full-day in length.
2. A ½ day refresher program will be held for the non-physician clinical staff.
This should be done within 4-6 weeks of the original program.
Post-program
Staff and physician burnout and work satisfaction will be reassessed.
Patient satisfaction will be assessed.
